The Curator's Comments

Fine art is serious business, but creativity takes many forms. Joseph Kinnebrew is an autodidact polymath. Critics have often commented on his amazing breadth of interests and depth of knowledge in areas ranging far afield from the world of fine art. But Kinnebrew is also a playful humorist, and these qualities often lap over into his various works illustrated as wit, satire, irony, and just plain fun.

Artists, he has said are tinkerers, some with a smile and others a frown but they all tinker. Years ago, there was a museum show, The Toys in Joe’s Attic,” Toys he first created for his children when they were young and later for adults when the toys and subjects became a bit more challenging in functions, form, and content.

Each year as Christmas approached, he closed down his studio, offering the space and tools to studio assistants and family members. He invited them to make holiday gifts, offerings from their hearts, minds, and hands.

Artist Statement

I was always the first one up on Christmas morning even when our children were young. In those days I knew Santa Claus personally. Waiting for everyone to get up, my job was to make the dressing and prepare the turkey.

The winter holidays in particular are special and I insisted each of us had to make a gift for everyone, something with our hands.  Something no other person, machine or creature could do.
